HURRpoem Analysis
There was something balletic about the way the ratchet strap was flung over his back as he hung the words on his body. The notion of attaching language to you connects somewhat to the tattooed culture. As Chukwuma Agubokwu biked down a hill with three dimensional cardboard letters on his back, his body addressed poetry being apart of us on a new plateau. Watching him ride on with the words made them stay with us, and linger on long after.
Chukwuma performed HURRPoem in front of the D.C. Barber Center. It was language in motion! The poem was created in the process of performance. (Ironic note: the artist cuts his own hair…)The poem created through the riding experience is “Left hurt in hurr so hurr no hurr.” The no hung off the shoulder for a moment, then letters crashed to the ground. Finally he ripped the letters apart and the language dissolved. HURRPoem was pain performed, in a sense. All that was left in the end was HURR, and the rest Chukwuma ripped to shreds. HURR is kept (anyone catch the double entendre?) Then, he bent over and carried HURR on his back, like a saved body. Like HURR savior, he then carried her away on hike. He became the hero personified in that ride. Next, he poured waters on the cardboard letters, as if putting out the fire or adding to the destruction of language. In the end though, even HURR is left in the pile—unsalvageable.
