The photos above are from a great photographic series by New York-born artist Elia Alba called “Larry Levan Live!”. She is known for creating different types of masks. As for her 2006 project, she described it as follows:
“For this project I created masks of Larry’s face for male and female performers to wear. The participants were videotaped and photographed during a few nights in small clubs in the Bronx. ‘Transformation’ is the driving theme behind this project; through the mask, dancer and DJ become one as they danced to recordings of his remixes. Larry was the ultimate DJ. He didn’t just excel at his job, he reinvented the concept of the DJ, blurring the boundaries of music, race, sexuality, and changing thousands of people’s perception of music and sound.”
