To loop, in its most distilled expression, is to enfold or encircle. In cultural production, the act of looping is a decision to reintroduce images and sounds within a spectrum of time. loop will highlight young artists who engage Diaspora at the periphery and center, using video and sound as their primary means of art making. Presented by independent curator Jessica N. Bell and filmmaker Terence Nance, loop features a survey of experimental video works and is the first medium-specific exhibition of its kind at MoCADA. This selection of new works will include short looped sound and video installations, as well as weekly screenings of feature length work within the Main Gallery.
loop features the works of acclaimed artists Mendi + Keith Obadike, Kevin Jerome Everson, alongside emerging artists Jodie Lyn-Kee-Chow, Legacy Russell, O’Neil Lawrence, and Wilmer Wilson IV. These single and multiple channel video works and soundscapes rely on the recurrence of visual and sonic themes to explore contemporary social, political and aesthetic concerns. The larger project of loop, is to examine the role of video in our current moment of cultural production and contemporary art practice.
Films to be screened each Thursday throughout the duration of the exhibition include the groundbreaking oeuvres of Sun Ra and Edward Bland, Space Is The Place and The Cry of Jazz, respectively. Other contemporary works to be featured include Kevin Jerome Everson’s The Age of Golden Fish and Pocas Pascoal’s All Is Well.
