FRESH MILK is feeling groovy about collaborating on a special project that spans the realms of sound, new media and contemporary art with Toronto based McLean Greaves, renown cross platform veteran in sound and visuals as well as mobile and social media, to produce a single unrestricted composition for basic.fm (UK).
FRESH MILK is looking for emerging musicians, contemporary creatives and sound artists to collaborate with Greaves to create THE SOUND OF NOW through original compositions, crowd sourced music, found, ambient or environmental sounds. Greaves will compose an extended audio work to be aired on basic.fm in September. Greaves is particularly interested in progressive, instrumental, underground, hip hop and electronic music and excited to work with all varieties of ambient sounds, drum loops, guitar parts etc.
Submissions are due by October 12th and are to be submitted to email@example.com. McLean Greaves will be in Barbados in November and will perform a 20-30 minute version of the sound work on a live FRESH MILK platform using visualization software to augment the work. The audience will be encouraged to participate in this immersive collaborative musical experience.
Thematic Framework: The Sound of Now
The Caribbean is often framed within the context of its weighted history including notions of colonialism, post-colonialism, independence, post-independence, modernism or post-modernism. Works being produced by many of the region’s younger practitioners seem less concerned with these historical frameworks or with creating work that defines the region in any essentialist manner. In an effort to expand discourse and make room for other considerations, artists are encouraged to reflect on fresh frameworks. Momentarily abandoning the heaviness of history, artists are invited to reflect on the sound of now.
- beats per minute: 110 bpm
- audio file format: mP3, .wav and MIDI
- length: 10-90 seconds (or 4 bars of music max)
Once the sound piece is complete, FRESH MILK will make an open call for the submission of images to be submitted to complement the sound work and for a video artist to mix the images (.jpg, .gif, .png) to the sound.
