"When you look at the system of the build up of leaves, there seems to be a sense of total wholeness to it. It seems to make sense, but intellectually it’s clear to you that it’s just an arbitrary display of numbers. So I’m interested in creating this space of rupture between thinking and feeling. What I say is that I have no responsibilities. I’m not trying to get you to feel anything. So what happens is that the issue of feeling is not explainable in the piece because of this rupture.” –Charles Gaines
